Where Do You Get Your Calcium?

Why buy the cow when you can get the calcium from plants? One of the many questions I get(and I get tons, as most vegans do I’m sure) when I say that I am a vegan is ” You don’t eat dairy? Then how do you get calcium?” Most people believe consuming dairy is the only way to receive adequate amounts of calcium which couldn’t be further from the truth. There are plenty of plant based sources that not only provide calcium but have higher amounts of absorbable calcium than dairy. Only 32% of calcium received from drinking milk(cow’s) can be absorbed by the body where as calcium received from leafy greens like kale and broccoli can be absorbed by 40-70%.

Calcium can be found abundantly in many plant based food groups. Leafy greens, Soy and foods made from soy like tempeh and soy milk, nuts, seeds, grains, blackstrap molasses, orange juice, some beans, and dried fruits like figs are all great sources for calcium.
